MLB.COM conducted a mock vote for the MVP of the 2024 season for 43 experts on the 21st (Korea Standard Time).
In the National League (NL), Mookie Betts and Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers took 23 and 18 first-place votes, respectively, to rank first and second.
There have been six times since 1969 when a player from the same team ranked first and second in the actual MVP vote. Jeff Kent-Barry Bonds (San Francisco Giants) in 2000 is a recent example.
Another point to watch is that no matter who wins the MVP between Betts and Ohtani, there will be players who have won the MVP in both leagues.
Betts was named the AL MVP in 2018, while Ohtani was playing for the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and 2023.
Betts was highly appreciated for his successful transition from outfielder to shortstop, although he fell behind Ohtani in terms of batting indicators.
Betts has a batting average of 0.337, eight homers, eight steals, 40 points, and an on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) of 0.988 in 48 games.
Ohtani, who is committed to batting this season, ranks first in batting average (0.353), slugging percentage (0.658) and OPS (1.080) overall in the Major League.
In addition, he is the only player with double digits in both home runs (13) and stolen bases (11).
Catcher William Contreras (Millywood Brewers), infielder Eli De La Cruz (Cincinnati Reds), and designated hitter Marcel Ozuna (Atlanta Braves) ranked third to fifth.
On the other hand, outfielder Juan Soto (New York Yankees) dominated the AL with 28 first-place votes.
Soto, who was traded from the San Diego Padres after the end of last season, was evaluated as further upgrading the Yankees' firepower.
While Soto had a batting average of 0.311, OPS 0.963, 11 home runs and 37 RBIs in 48 games, the Yankees' score per game rose from 4.15 (25th) last year to 4.85 (5th).
The remaining No. 1 votes were shared by outfielder Kyle Tucker (Houston Astros), infielder Gunner Henderson (Baltimore Orioles), outfielder Aaron Judge (Yankees), and infielder Bobby Witt Jr. (Kansas City Royals).
